July 9, 2011: A book that impacted my life...

A book that I have always remembered is "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day". I know that this book is universally known, but I really love this book because it helped me to grasp reality when I was little. When I was about 8 years old, I thought I lived the worst life ever. I thought only bad things happened to me and everyone else always got the better deal out of everything. One day my third grade teacher, who was my favorite teacher ever, read us this book. It really helped me feel like I was not the only person who dealt with an unlucky life. Alexander shared my grief. It also helped me realize that I cannot go around looking for all the bad things that could happen and have happened. I need to feel good about things in order to see the good that is happening to me. I will always be able to thank Alexander and his no good, horrible day for making me see that negativity only brings more negativity.

  1. Lauren, I don't remember this book, but it sound like a perfect theme for all ages. I felt/feel like that sometimes too. I used to say I was shleprock (sp?) from The Flintstones. :) Worrying doesn't solve anything, and it sure won't change anything. AND, most of the time, it is not as bad as you think it is.

  2. Lauren,

You provide an interesting perspective. I read it to show that we all have problems. As seen throught the eyes of a child you have opened my eyes.

  3. Lauren,

This is a good story. If we all could view our situation that way, we would feel differently about it. No matter how bad things seem, there is always someone worse off than we. When we think that we are the only ones going through something, there are those who have gone through it, those who are coming out of it, those who are still in it and those who are about to go into it. God said that there was nothing new that we are going through and with everything someone has gone through it before us. That point of view can help us to get a clearer picture of our situations.
